Quotes of Prem Rawat/Maharaji

The good news is that this thirst is within you, and the water that will quench it is within you. What you are looking for is within you, and the means to get in touch with it is also within you. This is a reality that is very sweet—not buried in conflict and pain, doubts and questions, but, in fact, dancing within you because you exist, because you are alive.

I know you wake up in the morning with an agenda. Great. But in doing all the things that you’re going to do that day, are you going to take a moment of your life and concentrate on the reason all those things are going to happen? The reason they are going to happen is that you are alive. If you weren’t, your agenda would definitely change. No more meetings, no more appointments. Everything would be dramatically different.

Just take a moment to understand your own thirst, not the thirst you have been taught. You may not think you have been taught a thirst, but you have. Every time you see a shop window, it is like a little sign saying, “You need this.” Every time you see an advertisement, it is saying, “You need this; you need that.” That’s the way the world runs, and I’m not proposing to change it.

Have we identified the need that we have always had that has not been borrowed or learned? People say, “Why am I not aware of it?” We have become experts at hiding it. We turn the volume up. This is our fix. If we hear a noise we do not like, we just turn the stereo up, and the noise is gone. When somebody is talking on and on, after a little while we just tune them out. They don’t exist anymore. They keep on talking, but we aren’t listening to anything they are saying.

When you feel a thirst and have no solution for it, it feels very much like a vacuum, and it’s not easy to live in a vacuum. We say, “Let me tune it out. Let me get rid of it.”

I propose that you take on that thirst. It is the most wonderful thirst you have ever had in your life. It is the noblest cause a human being can ever have. Of all the things that we can do, of all the things that we can achieve, there is one more that I consider incredibly noble. And that is to be fulfilled.

A lot of people ask, “Isn’t that very selfish?” Well, an extinguished lamp can never light anything. It can neither light the area around it, nor can it light another lamp. There is one prerequisite for that lamp to do any such thing: it needs to be lit.

Light your lamp. Looking at reality, one day it will go out. Light it while you have the chance. Let there be fulfillment in your life. Let there be clarity in your life. Let there be answers in your life. Not just questions but answers. We have become very good at questions. We question everything. But we are not very good at answers. And we are certainly not very good at accepting the answers regardless of how obvious they are. What is obvious?

What is obvious is that you exist. And because you exist, you have the possibility of being fulfilled. It’s incredibly simple and simply profound. This is what this existence is: breath comes and goes, comes again and goes again. And I walk my life one step at a time.

I’m concerned about tomorrow; I lament yesterday. I’m stuck in now. If tomorrow has to become a reality for me, it will have to convert itself into the day called today. Even (the term) a day makes it very long. It is not about twenty-four hours. It is about this breath that just came and went. That’s how short it is.

Does that show me my mortality? Or my immortality? In that moment called now, there are no limits. Even though it’s very small, it’s limitless. In that moment called now resides my determination to be fulfilled. That’s where my understanding resides. That’s where my fulfillment resides. Not somebody’s theory, but my fulfillment.

One problem is that whenever we have wanted something, we have had to go get it. What I’m talking about, you already have. You already have contentment inside of you. You don’t have to go somewhere to get it. You only need to discover it.

Look at this breath like you have never seen it before. Look at this life like you have never seen it before. Look at contentment like you have never looked at it before. Look at this moment like you have never looked at it before.

You can. The heart can capture a moment that will last for the rest of your life. When you become good at looking at a moment, and in that moment you capture contentment, fulfillment, joy, you will have quite a collection for the rest of your life.
